Drinking winе isn't аssосiаtеd with bеing сulturеd. Drinking gооd winе is аssосiаtеd with bеing сulturеd.
Gооd winе is sаvоrеd. It is соntеmplаtеd. Pеоplе thаt еnjоy gооd winе spеnd timе thinking аbоut thе winе - whеrе it саmе frоm, thе tеrrоir, hоw it wаs сrеаtеd, thе histоry оf thе winе, thе hеritаgе оf thе winе, thе flаvоrs оf thе winе.
If sоmеоnе is intеrеstеd in putting thоught intо thоsе еlеmеnts, thеy аrе, by dеfinitiоn, intеrеstеd in сulturе - bесаusе thоsе еlеmеnts аrе сulturе. Spеnd sоmе timе lеаrning аbоut Frеnсh winе аnd yоu will bеttеr undеrstаnd Frеnсh сulturе. Spеnd sоmе timе lеаrning аbоut Itаliаn winе аnd yоu will bеttеr undеrstаnd Itаliаn сulturе.

Because when you are drinking expensive wine, that means you have enough money to buy it. And because wines can get really expensive that means you are rich. And if you are rich you are cultured. It's called capitalism.

@AlexZ made some good points. Simply put, wine used to be a drink that only the royals and rich had access to, while middle and lower class men and women never drank anything richer than cheap beer. They say wine is the drink of a king.

I say it's because of the price, as simple as that. You can buy a beer for less than a dollar, but with wine you can get the cheapest one for $8 minimum. So it did not really become popular with the masses. So it's now thought that if you are a wine drinker, you must be "well-off" and "cultured".

I honestly have no idea about this.

However, I know many ignorant people who love to drink wine, so... This "theory" has no foundation for me (though it's widespread in the media and society).

Maybe it could be a marketing move?

I'm not exactly sure, but i would assume this tradition or idea goes back years ago when drinking expensive wine was sort of a display of wealth.

I really don't know why drinking wine is associated with being cultured. What I can think out is it could be because during most cultural activities wine is mostly used in entertainment and spicing up the show

I suppose that it is a little more elegant than drinking other things, so maybe just by default. Maybe because it more closely tied to the land, but that seems like a stretch.

I will not call it "cultured" because then I will have to call drinking beer and whisky as uncultured.

Wine is a total drink and so drinking wine us considered more sophisticated.

I think that people who drank wine USED to be considered cultured but these days I'm not sure that still applies. Over here in the UK at least, more and more people are choosing to drink wine than ever before and now its not unusual for people to buy a few bottles of wine instead of beer or spirits.

There is a difference between wine and good wine though, and while the cheaper varieties of wine aren't as bad as they used to be, people are judged still on what they drink and it can be easy to distinguish those who enjoy wine and those that just drink it to get drunk!

I kind of laughed when you said that you know a lot of ignorant people that drink wine.

I really know a lot of people like that. :D

I sometimes wonder: "Do they think drinking wine makes them more intellectual / interesting in the eyes of others?" :p

Honeslty saying that I don't know exactly about drinking wine being cultured.I think so that it would never be a part of any holy culture. There are many people all over the world who are not still prey of drinking wine.I would like to say that any culture would never give a permission to make it a part of culture.

I think its the way they collect or buy their wines that may make a difference why they get credit for being cultured. These people sometimes have a private stock of wine in their wine cellars-and actually collect expensive wines for that special meal or occasion. They also have quite a bit of knowledge about wine-which makes them stand out from, say a whino on the street corner, who really has only a preference for cheap wines and where to buy them.
