Chivas brothers Faces Imminent Workers Strike
A recent workers’ ballot from the Chivas Brothers distillery carried gruesome news for the beverage giant. Late last month the workers union sent the decision to a vote which would order strike action or accept a salary package from their employer. Chivas Brothers Workers Opt for Strike Action According to a press note from the […]

Seagram’s 5 Star Rye Whisky Review
After seeing a number of positive reviews for Seagram’s 5 Star Rye, I became curious about this drink. As it turned out, it was quite hard to find. I am in the US, and Seagram is a Canadian brand which is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec. I finally located a bottle of Seagram’s 5 Star Rye for about $30.00. It should be noted that even though Seagram’s 5 Star Rye is […]
Homemade Ginger Beer, and a Whisky Cocktail Recipe
I was recently invited around a couple of friends of mine who happen to be very talented in the kitchen. They enjoy making stuff from scratch, and have been known to make some absolutely delicious sourdough bread and elderflower cordial. This time they’d been watching River Cottage, and Hugh (the presenter) had shared a recipe for homemade ginger beer. Now, I absolutely love ginger beer, and this was some of […]
Best of Friends – A Guide to Whisky and Poker
Go to any pub poker game or even a casino and you’ll find scores of hedonistic, self-proclaimed poker aficionados with an obsession in perfecting their poker personas – yet most of them, and I’m basing this on my own experience, break one of the most elementary rules! They drink an eclectic mix of whisky, whiskey and even beer. You see poker has an unofficial best buddy – American Whiskey. Hence […]
Labrot & Graham Woodford Single Barrel Reserve
The Woodford Bourbon Single Barrel Reserve has received a lot of great reviews from connoisseurs of dry bourbons. This Kentucky bourbon from the Labrot & Graham Distillery in Versailles is a distinctive deep orange color and easily recognizable for its unique shade. The smell which greets my nose when I open the bottle is mostly oak and charcoal but with a bit of vanilla and possibly something fruity, but I […]
Jura Superstition
Today, I’ll be taking a look at Jura Superstition. It’s one of their standard expressions and will set you back somewhere between $29-46 in most shops. The name, so the folk at Jura tell us, stems from the many superstitions present on the Isle of Jura. One of them is that it is unlucky to cut peat before the beginning of May – I’m sure that one wasn’t invented by […]
Whisky Cocktail: Old Reakie Sneaky
Gather round, dear readers, gather round! Today is a most exciting day indeed, for a completely new being has come into existence; crafted by my own two hands! And what a magnificent being it is. Surpassed in warmth only by the whitest of lava; in beauty only by the magical splendor of that Disney classic, Fantasia; in taste.. well, ok, in taste it is arguably surpassed by a whole range […]
Evan Williams 1998
Having tried other vintages of the Evan Williams bourbon line from Heaven Hill, I decided to try the 13th vintage, released in 1998. The Evan Williams line of whisky has won a number of awards over the years. The bottle I bought was marked with the precise date it was bottled. The liquid is a deep amber color consistent with over a decade of aging.
Black Bottle
I recently had the pleasure of trying a blend which, to me, was completely new. How I hadn’t heard of it before I don’t know, either way it was a pleasant surprise to find an Islay blend priced at a highly affordable less than $3 for 16 ounces in an otherwise quite expensive pub! The whisky in question is, as the title suggests, Black Bottle (it’s funny how brainwashed you […]
Distillery Tour #4: Knockdhu
Wake up, wake up! After two days of delicious whisky, scrumptious food, and outstanding company, we have only one more distillery visit ahead of us. Day three sees our arrival at Knockdhu (anCnoc), where in the rain we are greeted by distillery manager Gordon Bruce and his two friendly dogs. The first sight to hit our eagerly awaiting eyes was that of the two recently completed warehouses, which will replace […]
Isle of Jura 10 Year Old
Jura 10 was, I believe, the first whisky produced upon the reopening of the distillery a handful or so of decades ago (that rhymes, by the way). The symbol it carries is apparently of ancient Celtic design and is the sign of “birth, beginning and the forces of nature” (that’s straight from Jura, that). Fascinating stuff, I’m sure you’ll agree. They seem big on the whole “ancient mysteries and magical […]
Four Roses Single Barrel
Four Roses Single Barrel bourbon is a select, high quality bourbon which is released only in limited quantities every year. Each bottle comes with a label which includes the name of the warehouse and racking location where the bourbon was aged, prior to being sampled for quality and bottled by hand. Considering the care and craft which goes into the creation of Four Roses Single Barrel vintages, it is surprising […]
Distillery Tour #3: Speyburn
Grab your drink and drink up, because we’ve got another distillery visit to complete before the day is over! The second day of our bloggers’ whisky tour saw not one (having already visited Balblair) but two distillery visits – the second being Speyburn. I really enjoyed our visit to Speyburn as it was completely different to the other two distilleries we had visited thus far on our tour. That’s because […]
Glenfarclas 1953
“You lucky, lucky bastard.” That’s what I imagine most of you will be thinking in about a minute, once you’ve read what the mailman handed me a little while back. Well, I say a little while, it was actually about a month and a bit – which makes this my new personal record in lazy review writing. All that nonsense aside, what the mailman handed me was an inconspicuous looking […]
Distillery Tour #2: Balblair
Day two of the trip started out similarly to day one: another early alarm (though not quite as early as day one), and another exceedingly unspectacular May morning. This time around, however, I was in a hotel rather than my room – don’t ask me its name or location, I was every bit the passive passenger – and rather than flying to Wick we would be driving to Balblair. Whiz […]
Aberfeldy 21 Year Old
Oh dearest, dearest pocket. I sincerely hope you can forgive me once more for digging too deep, collecting the very last you had to offer, for no reason other than my own decadence. Forgive, and recover. I’m sure most, or at least many, fellow whisky lovers of less than unlimited means will have been in a similar situation at least once: you know you shouldn’t buy something, but equally you […]
Distillery Tour #1: Old Pulteney
My alarm went off at 6:05, and after a mere five hours sleep – far short of the eight I so desperately need – I was greeted by an incredibly mediocre May morning. Normally this would all add up to one very unhappy, if not downright moody, Martin: but not today. Ahead of me lay three days of good whisky, good food, and, as fortune had it, exceptionally good company! […]
