The Old Fashioned is the forefather of all cocktails and one of the oldest. The old fashioned appeared for the first time in the 18th century, and many variations have been made since then. Only one thing stayed the same: the combination of spirits, water, sugar and bitters. Before the Old Fashioned got its name, it was simply called 'Whiskey Cocktail'.
