Football (soccer)

Does anyone on this forum watch football (soccer)? I feel like it's one of the most exciting sports out there, the players nowadays give their all and it shows. Watching Champions League and the Euros right now has been a blast, a lot of underdog stories this year as well which was fun.

I'm a huge fan of soccer. I used to play a lot myself but now I'm just watching.

Today is an awesome game. France vs. Germany. Who do you think will win?

Btw, yesterday was an awesome game too. To be honest, I didn't expect Wales to lose that way. Portugal totally won the second half.

Yeah, Portugal and Ronaldo played their hearts out yesterday, props to them. As for today's match.. Germany is looking pretty good and stable, but I'm sure France can pull off an upset. I'm expecting 3-2 for France in extra time. What about you?

Me... well, I can't even predict anything. Both teams are strong as hell. However, If I have to make a choice, I'd go for Germany.

Unfortunately, it's not Italy against France. That would have been more fun.
Yeah, I was rooting for Italy in their game vs Germany and they actually played pretty good and kept their heads up even though they were dominated. It sucks that they lost in the penalty shoot out.

It sucks they lost it the way they did. Actually, they had a fantastic opportunity to win it, thanks to Buffon. However, players like Zaza and Pelle completely ruined the whole thing. The way they approached their kicks was ridiculous.

I grew up in a household full of sports fans. I don't know if that's why it made me stray away from sports, but I've shown little to no interest in football as an adult. It may be the screaming at the television sets and the anger that comes with losing teams, but it never stuck with me.

The idea of seeing a live football game sounds fun to me, but I cannot watch it on television. I get nervous around people shouting at the screen and spending their day angry. It's not every single game that's like this, but in my experience, it's plenty.

I think it's just about the worst sport to watch. Half of the time nothing happens and the other half of the time people are falling over for no apparent reason.

However I've watched a couple of these Euro 2016 games, France - Germany wasn't too bad!

Damn! It's now Portugal vs. France. That's certainly not that I was looking for since the day one of this competition. Anyway, I'm still gonna watch.

And how do you feel about that?

Let me take a guess. The main sport you're passionate about is basketball. Right? If I'm wrong, then it's anything else where the score is usually huge compared to that of soccer.

But I understand you. Soccer is all about building an anticipation while watching. Some games are very tense and you literally can't just move around in order not to miss anything out, as it may happen right now or exactly the second you move your eyes from the TV.

Huh, I knew France had something up their sleeves. What can I say, Schweinsteinger's penalty "foul" was pretty stupid and uncalled for, but then Neuer messed up at the second goal as well. Germany were unlucky to not put a couple in the back of the net but France deserve the win, they played pretty good.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to question the fairness of their victory. Except for the penalty part, maybe. I don't agree with the ref either. However, Germany has had TONS of opportunities to even the score and become the one to lead. But they almost scored which doesn't count.

So, France will now try as hard as they can. The very fact that they are hosts drives them.

I feel like Germany don't have a striker and that shows, Muller hasn't showed up at this Euro at all and it hurt his country.
I'm pretty sure Portugal is going to win it, but it's going to be a tough battle.

Yeah, that's true. He's very good at scoring goals when it comes to performing at World Cup but Euro seems to be his weakest link. I've no idea why. Neither does he I guess. Miroslav Klose was once very strong but he's not around the national team anymore.

Did you know that Griezmann has both a German and a Portugal descent? That's kind of funny to me. Of course, he was born and raised in France and has no direct connection to any of these countries but the very fact makes me laugh a bit.

Yeah, I knew that. I also knew that Gundogan, Ozil, Can and some other German players had to choose to either play for Turkey or Germany. Just imagine a turkish side with that line-up.
Wish Klose was still around, he had a cracking World Cup despite his age.

Oh, damn! Turkey would have been strong enough to go for the finals then. I hope Klose will return to the national team for the World Cup if has a great 2017/18 season. However, I'm not even sure that he hasn't retired. Gotta check this out.

As much as I would love to see Klose play again I don't think he can keep up the pace, he's going to be 40 years old in 2018 and IIRC he already retired from the national team. Mario Gomez is a player that is similar to Klose and he will most likely be present at the World Cup, should be fun to see him in action.

I am a big and quite experienced fan of football. I was very close to become a professional but I was injured. Anyway, I think that even though football today is great I think that it was much better before. It was prettier to watch but on the other hand you had tougher players. These guys now fall like Bambi on ice. It is ridiculous. I was paying attention and I watch the game from 1990, when I was 3, although I recollect some of that period, I started to be active around 1994. Then, in the internet era, I watched a lot of videos from early period and all period actually and I realized players were much tougher then. It it was like having 4 Pepes in defence.
Just look at Ronaldinho, Zidane, Bergkamp, Rivaldo, Klinsman, Canavaro, Denis Wise, Zola, Hasselbaink and before them, Desailly, Thiram, the whole Juventus and Chelsea squat from Flo era and before them ruud Gulit, Rijkaard, Matheus ... These players were very tough and they were at their best. Just remember how John Terry bounced off Ronaldinho in that semi final. Terry is a strong guy.
Also, some serbian tough guys, Mihajlovic, Jugovic and probably the best DMF Igor Duljaj. Check this guy if you do not know who he is.
